The History of the German Flag
The German flag was first displayed in 1832 at the Hambach Festival. Its colors--black, red, and gold--were initially used by the Lützower soldiers during the liberation wars, intended to symbolize the young generation that strove for freedom and unification. Coming from divergant German states, the army uniform became a unifying trait, stained black with red and gold brass buttons. After the end of the Empire, in 1918, black, red and gold became the German national colors and the flag was deemed official by the Weimar Republic. Following the Second World War, both the FRD (Federal Republic of Germany) and the GDR (German Democratic Republic) adopted the flag, until 1959, when East Germany branded the flag with their coat of arms, only to later return to the oiginal design.
