The Meaning of the Tricolour (the French Flag)
The French flag is often referred to as the tricolour, which is actually a term that applies to all flags in which three colors are arranged horizontally or vertically. Before the French Revolution, France's national flag was simply pure white, the royal colour of the Bourbon Dynasty, with blue and red representing the coat of arms colors for Paris. Used during the Revolution, however, the tricolour flag later became a national symbol for liberty and started to appear everywere after the proclamation of the new French Republic. The flag was eventually declared the official national flag of the First French Republic in 1794. Shortly thereafter, the three colors became synonymous with the French slogan of freedom (white), equality (blue), and fraternity (red). Having remained unchanged since 1794, the French flag qualifies as one of the oldest flags amongst the European countries.
