The History of the Spanish Flag
The oldest element of the Spainish flag is the shield featured on its yellow stripe, which depicts a combination of the arms of Spain's four historical kingdoms, including Castile, Leon, Aragon and Navarra. Earlier versions of the flag included Navara and the Kingdom of Granada, but were later disgarded. The flag's color scheme of red, yellow, and red originated under the rule of Charles III in 1785. This color combination has remained intact over time, continued after a brief interruption during the Second Spanish Republic. During the Franco dictatorship, the flag was temporarily replaced by the emblem of an eagle. It was not until 1981, after the first free elections, however, that the latest version of the flag was introduced.
