White and red have constituted as Poland's national colors since 1831, when the country first declared independence from Russia. Their significance derive from the colors of the coat of arms of Poland's two constituent nations that comprised the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and date back to the 13th century. White is intended to symbolizes peace and honesty, while red is meant to reflect strength, bravery, and valour.
