The Meaning of the Turkish Flag

The crescent and star of the Turkish flag bear a long history and strong tie to tradition. The star is the symbol of the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Constantinople, while the crescent is in tribute to Diana, the goddess of the hunt. Such symbols appeared on the late flag of the Ottoman Empire in very much the same fashion as the modern Turkish flag, having undergone only minor changes since ancient times.
