The History of the Austrian Flag
The shield emblem featured in the center of the Austrian flag is amongst the oldest in the world, with evidence tracing its existence back to the year 1230. Allegedly, the inspiration for the red and white emblem came to Duke Leoplold after a bloody battle during the Crusades. While his entire garment was subsequently soaked in red blood, the cloth underneath this belt remained pure white, hence, the color contrast of the white and red emblem. The national flag of Austria, however, was actually black and gold until the dissolution of the Empire in 1918 and rise of the Republic of Austria, when the red and white flag became nationally recognized as official. While Austria lost its independence during the Nazi regime, the red and white flag was once again reinstated after WWII ended and the Federal Republic of Austria reclaimed its sovereignty.
