The Meaning of the Bavarian Flag
The colors of Bavaria's flag (white and blue) derive from the Bavarian Wittelsbach dynasty, while the rhombuses on the banner come from the heraldry of the Grafen von Bogen, which have belonged to the house of Wittelsbach since 1242. The emblem in the center of the flag, divided into quarters, represents the various regions within Bavaria. For the region of Palatinate, the golden lion stands on a black background. Franks are represented by the red and white square, and the Upper Palatinate is depicted in gold. The last square shows a blue lion on a white background, the Spannheimer lion, which stands for the Wittelsbach dynasty. In 1946, white and blue were declared the national colors, with Bavaria's flag being recognized as official shortly thereafter.
