The Flag of Saxony

Red and gold are the original national colors of Saxony and the royal colors of the Wettin, Albertine, and Ernestine families. During the Liberation Wars in 1815, King Frederick Augustus ordered that a white cockade of Saxon troops be added around a broad green band for better distinction. Although the battle was lost and the king was captured for a short time, the cheering crowd that welcomed the troops upon their return to Dresden could be seen bearing white and green garlands and flags, which inspired the king to use those as the national colors.
